Historical Background

Loxton House ( Map 4)

On August 5th 1833,

surveyor R. Dixon was instructed to prepare a field plan for the establishment of a village on the reserve at the junction of Muscle Creek and the Hunter River.

(Map 11)

St. Aubins (Map 9)

The town was gazetted on 23rd October 1833, and the first blocks of land were offered for sale on 26th  1834.

By 1840 the town had a population of 245 in 41 houses, a few shops and several inns.

In 1842 the area south of Muscle Creek was developed as 'Forbestown'. but became South Muswellbrook due to confusion with the town of Forbes.

Campbell's Corner (map 8)

By 1870 the population had increased to 1445 and the Municipality of Muswellbrook was proclaimed on 13th April with William Bowman of "Balmoral" as the first Mayor.
