On August
5th 1833,
surveyor
R. Dixon was instructed to prepare a field plan for the
establishment of a village on the reserve at the junction of Muscle
Creek and the Hunter River. |

The town was gazetted on 23rd October 1833, and
the first blocks of land were offered for sale on 26th 1834.
By 1840
the town had a population of 245 in 41 houses, a few shops and several
inns.
In 1842 the area south of Muscle Creek was developed as 'Forbestown'.
but became South Muswellbrook due to confusion with the town of Forbes. |

By 1870 the population had increased to 1445 and
the Municipality of Muswellbrook was proclaimed on 13th April with William
Bowman of "Balmoral" as the first Mayor. |
