at 5km

 

 

a 24 km circular detour via Glenbawn Rd./Allan Bridge Rd/ Segenhoe Rd will take you past Glenbawn Dam, a number of famous horse studs and over the  historic Allen Suspension Bridge

This road follows the Isis river past the Belltrees Polo ground, and Waverley Station to the Timor area where it branches 3 ways

         - left to the New England Highway days

         - straight ahead to Crawney Pass, Nundle  and Tamworth

          - right over Sergeant’s Gap and  rejoins Hunter Road at Ellerston

×Belltrees

Excellent view of the Belltrees 44 stand shearing shed designed by J. Horbury Hunt.  Glimpses of the beautiful historic Belltrees homestead can also be seen.  The Belltrees property was selected in 1831

Just after crossing the Hunter at Belltrees is the side road to Stewarts Brook– an old gold mining area of the 19th  centaury

Ø Hunter Rd follows the Hunter River through predominantly beef cattle properties to

  

×Moonan Flat

Tiny rural village, a general store and a pub. 

Walk across the suspension foot bridge over the Hunter River.   There are picnic areas on the river bank.

Prior to the advent of motor vehicles as the normal form of transport, Moonan Flat was an important service centre for the top end of the Hunter Valley

 

Ø Follow the Hunter River  along Hunter Road  and turn right onto

 

 

×Tomalla Road

which climbs from the Hunter River to the Barrington Tops Plateau.  There are spectacular views across Ellerston Station to the Great Dividing Range from Nundle area to Walcha

  

ØAfter passing Hunter Springs,  where the tiny creek you cross is the beginning of the Hunter River on its >400km long journey to the Pacific Ocean at Newcastle;     turn right onto
