LOCATION
CLIMATE |
Uralla is situated 489km from Brisbane and 545km from Sydney in the
glorious Northern Tablelands of New South Wales.
The climate has four distinct seasons ranging from –2 in winter to
30o in summer and is rich in history, from Aboriginal rock art to
gold fever and the legend of Thunderbolt, the bushranger.
Winter brings days that are bright crisp, and clear, perfect for
invigorating walks, or riding through the majestic gorge country –
and the nights are just made to settle in front of a crackling fire
with a glass of wine and good friends. |

HERITAGE
WALK
McCROSSIN'S MILL |
Uralla’s Heritage Walking
Tour is the ideal way to view the well-preserved buildings and
houses.
The walk or if you prefer
self-drive tour, starts at McCrossin’s Mill. This fine building
dates back to1870, and in its heyday was a steam-powered flour mill
- one of seventeen flour mills in the New England region. It
provided 1000 bushels per week of fine silk-dressed flour for the
350 people of Uralla.
The three story building
is now a museum housing paintings of “The Death of Thunderbolt”.
On the first and second floors you can be transported back in time
in your mind as you view Chinese Joss House, Gold mining display and
an Aboriginal Diorama amongst many other interests. |
 |
|
HASSETT'S MILITARY MUSEUM
|
Another
wonderful museum to visit is Hassett’s Military Museum which has a
remarkable collection of military memorabilia, including weapons,
uniforms and medals from World War 1 to the present day.
|
|
FOUNDRY |
The New England Brass and Iron Lace Foundry is a
must when you visit Uralla. Take some time to wander around and see
where much of New England’s and some of Sydney’s iron lace was
produced from 1872.
The foundry is a working museum and still
uses some of the original tools and methods used in making iron lace
and brass items.
You may also see the blacksmith swinging his
hammer making marvellous wrought iron products –
Presently, (Feb 2006) the future of the Foundry is
undecided as the building with all its contents is for sale.
Visits may be arranged by phoning in advance

GOLD |
Gold has lured many
people to Uralla since the 1850’s and fossicking is a great pastime
during the warmer days. Alluvial gold can still be found in many of
the creeks around Uralla and whether or not you are lucky enough to
find the real thing or just “fool’s gold” – it’s a lot of fun |
