THINGS TO DO -
PLACES TO SEE
IN WINGEN
|
|
Towarri National Park
|
This
National Park was declared in 1998 and is a most interesting area
for bushwalkers.
Towarri with Wingen Maid and Cedar Brush, cover a rugged part of the
Liverpool range.
They are at the junction of three diverse regions and contain an
amazing variety of landforms, plants and wildlife.

The
Wingen Maid
|
A rocky outcrop just south of Wingen in the Towarri
National Park it can be seen clearly form the highway.
It is the southern face of a mountain spur with the upper part of
the cliff resembling the outline of a seated woman facing south,
holding a small bunch of flowers to her breast.

Aboriginal mythology says that the maid cried tears of fire when her
warrior husband did not return from battle. She was turned to stone
and her tears set the mountain afire (Burning Mountain).

Burning
Mountain
|
Early
explorers assumed Burning Mountain’s billowing smoke and peak of
grey, smouldering ash was an active volcano.
In fact,
the mountain’s naturally-burning coal seam, unique in Australia, is
thought to have been smoking away for over 5500 years. After a
pleasant walk you can look down from the viewing platform into the
vents where the smoke emerges.
Burning
Mountain, officially known as Wingen Mountain, is believed to have
been naturally ignited.
The
smouldering fire is slowly burning through a thick coal seam about
30 metres below the surface.
It is a
reasonable walk from the car park to the burning mountain viewing
platform but the track is well signposted and walking shoes are
recommended.
